How One Mom Received Prenatal Vitamins

This is the experience of one expectant mom who found herself in a tough situation and needed help with prenatal care and prenatal vitamins. Though every situation is different, many aspects of her story reflect what other mom’s say about why they sought help from a pregnancy center or free health clinic.
This is her story...
In 2019, my husband and I had a three-year-old son. My husband had just transitioned careers and was working as a food delivery driver to make ends meet. At the same time, I left the workplace to become a full-time stay-at-home mom and student.
Then, I found out I was pregnant after taking an at-home pregnancy test. Our family was in a never-before-experienced situation. Now, we needed to figure out how to secure prenatal care without health insurance.
What started as initial excitement transitioned to thoughts of uncertainty regarding prenatal care choices and our state of financial instability. We were not aware of our options but knew we needed to start looking for answers to have a safe and monitored pregnancy.
How We Found No-Cost Prenatal Care
As many would do in this situation, I googled “prenatal care without health insurance” and “free pregnancy care”. That is when I discovered a local pregnancy center. They provide prenatal care to women in situations like mine with no-cost pregnancy confirmation, ultrasounds, consultations, classes, prenatal vitamins and assistance. This was such a weight off my shoulders!
I scheduled an appointment that resulted in a registered nurse confirming my pregnancy and performing an ultrasound. They also gave me a 45-day supply of prenatal vitamins. With my family's limited income, prenatal vitamins were vital to supplementing essential nutrients for me to develop a healthy baby.
After receiving prenatal care from the pregnancy center, we felt relieved. We had found an organization with individuals who made us feel seen and heard during a vulnerable time of need. Without their help, we were unsure if we would have received prenatal care and support as quickly during the earlier stages of pregnancy.
What Follow-Up Prenatal & Postnatal Care Looked Like
We had a couple of visits to this pregnancy center, then we found another one closer to where we lived. The new center provided the same quality level of support in preparation for the birth of our child and beyond.
Our baby was born happy and healthy with no complications. The pregnancy center offered postnatal support and education materials that helped us develop stronger confidence in ourselves as parents.
Why The Vitamin Bridge Is So Important
The Vitamin Bridge was started with the purpose of donating prenatal vitamins and healthy diet education materials to disadvantaged, expectant moms through a network of “first-touch providers”. So far, these community pregnancy centers and free health clinics have helped provide a 100-day supply of vitamins to more than 37,000 women (and their babies)! Will you help us provide prenatal vitamins for the next 37,000? Every $5 provides prenatal vitamins to a pregnant mom who needs them. You can donate here >>
