Suggestions for a healthy diet during pregnancy include:
• Fill half the plate with fruits and vegetables. Choose fresh, frozen, canned, dried, and 100% juice. Include dark green, red, and orange vegetables; beans and peas; and starchy vegetables. • Make at least half the grains whole grains. Include oatmeal, popcorn, whole-grain bread, and brown rice. • Move to low-fat or fat-free milk, yogurt, or cheese. Fortified soy beverages also count. |

• Vary protein by choosing items such as seafood, lean meats and poultry, eggs, beans and peas, soy products, and unsalted nuts and seeds.
• Use the Nutrition Facts label and ingredients list to limit items higher in sodium, saturated fat, and added sugars. Drink water instead of sugary drinks. Choose vegetable oils instead of butter. • Enriched grains, beans, peas, oranges, spinach, or other dark-green leafy vegetables can help provide the folate rich food needed. |
Sources on Prenatal Nutrition
Adequate nutrition during pregnancy is important for the health of mother and baby. Improving nutrition creates the potential for better outcomes by reducing risk of preterm births, low birth weights, and birth defects. Most doctors recommend that pregnant women take a vitamin and mineral supplement every day. Doctors often recommend prenatal vitamins for those trying to get pregnant as well.
